Signs of Unsafe Electrical Wiring in a Home
When home electrical systems go bad, the results can be catastrophic. Unsafe electrical wiring can overheat, for instance, causing other electrical components to melt. That situation can lead to fires and electric shocks, which in turn can cause serious injuries, or even worse. Not to mention, property damage can be extensive.
None of this info is meant to alarm anyone. Instead, we want to remind homeowners to stay aware. Keep an eye out for signs of electrical problems. And, when appropriate, call in professionals to inspect your electrical system. With careful observation, you can protect yourself, your family, and your home.
All that said, here are six common red flags, signs that could alert you to major home wiring issues.
You Hear Unexplained Crackles and Buzzing
Maybe you turn on an appliance, and you suddenly hear a strange noise. Or perhaps you flick on your lights and unusual sounds emerge. Either way, you likely have an electrical problem on your hands.
Unexplained crackling and buzzing are not normal. Rather, they can signify loose or fraying wires, among other potential problems. And, due to the risk of electrical shocks, you should have those sounds investigated right away.
You Smell Burning Odors or See Scorch Marks
If you smell something burning in your home, don’t take it lightly. In particular, if you notice burning odors coming from an electrical switch or outlet, the wires inside might be overheating. And the excessive heat could spark an electrical fire.
Scorch marks are another sign of electrical overheating. If any of your outlets look burned or discolored, a pro should check out your wiring as soon as possible.
Your Outlets Are Warm, Hot, or Vibrating
Try placing your hand on all of your electrical outlets. They should feel cool to the touch, or they should be at room temperature. If, however, an outlet feels warm or hot, it’s a bad sign.
Simply stated, electrical outlets should not release heat. Warm outlets are a symptom of overloaded circuits and unsafe electrical wiring. And those conditions can, of course, lead to fires.
If you do have a warm outlet, first unplug anything that might be plugged into it. Then call an electrician immediately.
Similarly, if you touch an outlet and it’s vibrating, something’s amiss with your electrical system.
You Notice Damaged Wires
Do any wires in your home look compromised? If so, a professional could inspect all of your wiring and then replace the damaged wires.
If a wire is worn out, frayed, or broken, it could cause, once again, fires and electrical shocks.
In addition, if you see any wires with little teeth marks on them, you might have a rodent infestation. In that case, you should call a pest control specialist as well as an electrician. Indeed, if mice or rats are chewing on your wires, it can be a serious hazard.
Your Lights Are Flickering or Dimming
When you turn on a certain light, do you notice that it flickers? Or does it gradually darken as time passes? And, even if you change the light bulb, does it continue to flicker or dim?
It might seem like no big deal if a light in your home flickers. In actuality, it could indicate unsafe electrical wiring, loose connections, or an overloaded circuit, all of which are significant threats.
In some cases, lights dim when people use two or more appliances at the same time. That often means that a home’s electrical system is overtaxed and needs to be overhauled.
Your Breaker Box Keeps Tripping
What does an electrical breaker box do? Its purpose is to turn off a home’s supply of electricity whenever there’s an electrical overload. By doing so, the breaker box can prevent fires, shocks, and physical damage to a house.
However, if your electrical breaker box trips often several times per month or more and for no apparent reason, it’s not just a nuisance. Something is wrong.
Most likely, your household has unsafe electrical wiring, or it’s utilizing more electricity than your system can manage. In any event, don’t wait to have your breaker box evaluated!
How a Professional Electrician Could Help
If you ever suspect that your electrical system has gone awry, an electrician could:
- Make sure your service panel, switches, and outlets all work properly
- Examine your wiring to see if it’s in good shape
- Verify that your electrical safety devices, such as your ground-fault circuit interrupters, are functioning correctly
